The City of Angels Saxophone Quartet was founded in 1990 at Cal State University Northridge.
The ensemble won top honors at the prestigious Coleman and Carmel Chamber Music Competitions, in both cases being the first saxophone quartet to be awarded first prizes. Following these accolades, the group toured the USSR. More recently, the group was honored to be chosen to perform at the North American Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) convention and received an endorsement from the Southern California Consortium of Chamber Music Presenters.
The year 2014 saw numerous performance commitments, the premiere of a new work written for the Quartet, and the development of a new historical concert and multimedia offering tracing the early history and development of saxophone ensembles.
The Quartet enjoys introducing new audiences to the expressive musical potential of four saxophones performing chamber music. A large variety of repertoire that includes classical transcriptions, original works and jazz standards gives concert presenters flexibility to meet the needs of their diverse audience bases. Succinct commentary to foster audience inclusion through human stories and context are hallmarks of all programs.
